Indian Residential Schools

Inspired by a woven blanket, we have created a large scale art installation, made out of hundreds of items reclaimed from Residential Schools, churches, government buildings and traditional and cultural structures including Friendship Centres, band offices, treatment centres and universities, from across Canada. The Witness Blanket stands as a national monument to recognise the atrocities of the Indian Residential School era, honour the children, and symbolise ongoing reconciliation.

Library and Archives Canada presents photographs from its collection on Residential Schools, taken between 1885 and 1996. This single portal allows easy access to photos from the province or region of your choice.

The exhibit includes video and image content with explanatory text. It is focused on the experiences of students in American residential schools.

More than 100 photographs from the Presbyterian Archives of Canada dating from the 1930's to the 1960's.

The Archdiocese has digitized 6,000 of images of Indian Residential Schools with the objective of making historical materials in the archives more widely available.
