Black History in Canada

This is a guide to information on the topic of Black history in Canada containing open source, library-owned, and subscriber-based resources. It is meant to fill a gap left by major commercial publishers that have not produced a database for the study of Black history in Canada. However, Black history sources are available in provincial and federal archives as well as in local archives - we've attempted to compile these varied sources here.

Photo: "Black Canadians at Queens Park," July 20, 1920. Public domain. Original file located at the City of Toronto archives. The photo depicts a group of mostly black Canadians on the steps of the Ontario Legislature in Toronto. It was taken at the dedication of a plaque in memory of the members of the No. 2 Construction Battalion, an all-Black non-combat battalion that served in World War I.
