Proxy Bookmarklet

If you do your research off-campus the proxy bookmarklet will give you access to library resources without having to come through the library website.

What is it?

The proxy bookmarklet is a small application that allows you to reload a webpage through the library's proxy server.

Why is it useful?

You may receive notifications of journal articles from a publisher or database by email, RSS feed or simply from a web search.  With the proxy bookmarklet you can access the articles without having to back track to the library website.

How to use it?

To use the proxy bookmarklet in Firefox or Chrome, left click and drag this link, uO Proxy, to the toolbar.  Alternatively, you can right click and add to bookmarks.

To use the proxy bookmarklet in IE, right click this link, uO Proxy, and add to favourites.

To use the proxy bookmarklet with an iPhone, iTouch or iPad, copy this line of text

javascript:location.href='https://login.proxy.bib.uottawa.ca/login?url='+(location.href)

Add it as a bookmark and rename it uO Proxy
Now the important part!  Edit this bookmark.  Tap the bookmarks button (it looks like an open book) at the bottom of the screen (iPhone/iTouch) or top of the screen (iPad). Then, tap "Edit".  Find the bookmark you just saved (uO Proxy) and tap it.  You now need to change the URL to the text you copied above.  Tap the URL field (it begins with "http://"), then delete everything in it and paste the text you copied.  Click "Done".

Google Scholar @ uOttawa

Do you use Google Scholar to find journal articles?

You can setup Google Scholar to link to the uOttawa Library

  1. Click on the gear in the upper right hand corner to set your Google Scholar preferences.
  2. In the section Library Links search for ottawa
  3. Checkmark the box beside University of Ottawa Library/Bibliothèque uOttawa - afficher/get it! uottawa
  4. Save your preferences

Now when you search in Google Scholar you will see a link labelled afficher/get it! uottawa.  By clicking on this link you can acces the full text of the article if the library has a subscription to the journal in which it is published.

If you are off-campus you can access the article by using the Proxy Bookmarklet.
